Help: video thumbnails preview disappear

After installing a few mediaplyers like VLC, the automatic thumbnail preview
of my videos dissappear. I'm not talking simple as changing the settings for
showing thumbnails - they never show again whatever I do.

Is there any string in the registry I can change for this rediculous bug.

and no it doesn't help to re-install mediaplayer 9.
The icon I get is just the default mediaplayer logo.
