Another Tray Icon Missing

Using WD that came with Vista, no program update seems avalible.
I checked the box "Always".
The Icon will appear only after manually starting WD.
Everytime I shutdown or restart the computer the Icon is missing.
I double checked the "Always" box, yep it's checked!
I tried to read all the posts before I created this post.
Any Ideas?

Here are many sources where you may resolve the problem. This information
dedicated to XP, was provided in another recent post by Dave M, and he should
get the credit. I hope it will help you with your Vista/Defender icon problem
=========
Since I see your running XP, the most usual answer to this question (which
occurs regularly) is that there's a bug in XP which has still not been
nailed down. I'm not sure if the problem extends to Vista, at least it
hasn't been mentioned in this group yet.

Take a look at this page and the link from this page for the standard
possible fix sequence which even has a name, the Ostuni Workaround:

Let us know how you make out.

I remembered another possible fix... putting a simple shortcut to the
systray exec in the startup folder, which I did myself, either as a test or
to solve the same problem you're having... I can't remember. It's
referenced in here for example:
http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=38455

.....and I stumbled across the encyclopedia of missing icons again, which is
here in all it's drawn out glory:

Hi Steve;

Before you drive yourself crazy with all those possible workarounds, I want
to make sure your not running Windows Live OneCare, which by default
disables Defender on re-boot since the Defender engine is basically
incorporated into WLOC.

Good try on this one John, but that "only after manually starting WD" has
me thinking that OneCare has it's fingers in there. Here are the latest
versions for all of Defender's Vista components, good for the rest of this
week only- perhaps:

Windows Defender version: 1.1.1505.0 Vista-32 bit system
Engine Version: 1.1.2704.0
Definition Version: 1.20.2832.2 created ºn 8/8/2007 ªt 10:51 PM

If you are running WLOC, you can leave Defender installed but disabled, as
it will come back to life if OneCare is ever removed.

Dave - John, thanks for your reply.

I only used the free live one care scanner on this computer, so I went ahead
and uninstalled it, had to use the install cleaner tool as nothing showed up
in "Programs and Features" to uninstall. I also ran the popular registry
cleanup tools.
That didn't work so I'm looking into the other links you provided.

The only other weird behavior that has started recently is "AVG Free" won't
load correctly on startup unless I turn OFF Vista's User Account Control.
Turning OFF UAC solves AVG problem but still no WD tray Icon until I manually
start WD.

Related? I'll keep you informed of my progress.
Thanks again guys for your help.

OK there's a OneCare nomenclature problem... rearing it's ugly head again.

There are 2 distinct programs involved

1) The Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner (totally free online on-demand
scan and cleanup tool)
2) The Windows Live OneCare subscription suite - always on AV-AS monitor
backup and cleanup (free for 90 day trial - then renewed annually by a fee)

1) Will NOT disable defender. 2) Will disable defender even in the 90 day
trial version.

So if you saw the term "Safety" in it's name, it should have had no effect
at all on Defender, but if you had the 90 day trial it would have disabled
defender while installed.

I had to make some changes to AVG anti-spyware free recently the Guard.exe
needs to be running even when doing an on-demand scan. I don't run AVG AV
so I'm not sure of the situation with that Grisoft product, may be similar.
RobinB in this group knows it well though.

I managed to make things much worse than better so I used system restore to
correct my mangeled attempts. The computer is working fine again in all
areas except the WD Icon.
I am giving up for now on this one, I don't have enough experience with
Vista to keep hacking and I'm wondering if I shouldn't post this problem in
the vista group since this version of WD came with fista and can't be
replaced.
I do appreciate your responses and will keep your suggestions for future
reference.
Thank you again, Steve
