Another silly question about domain recovery

Hi,

I'm a bit confused about the following.

Windows 2000 Server Reskit says that before NT 4 domain upgrade I should
take one BDC offline and when it's unplugged from the network, I should
promote it to PDC as a safeguard.

What does it really matter if the offline NT DC is promoted to PDC or has
still the BDC role if my domain controller upgrade process fails and I must
bring my spare NT DC back online? Isn't it quite the same if I bring the BDC
back online and then promote it to be a PDC?

Which method should I use in practice?

Take the BDC offline, upgrade your PDC to W2K. This way you'll have a way to
get back to the way it was before the upgrade attempt if something unplanned
should happen.
