Another Q regarding Win XP SP2

Hi, I posted earlier tonight about how I don't have my Win XP Home Ed. SP1
disc. (I bought my computer from Dell and thought I saved all of my discs).
I haven't upgraded to SP2 and was nervous if something goes wrong and I don't
have my XP disc.

I got some great responses but had another question. Unfortunately, my
original question is on the 2nd page here so I don't think I'm going to get a
response. I've copied and pasted it here and would greatly appreciate help.
Thank you.

"I'm going to start with Dell and see if I can get another disc from them.

I am very nervous about installing SP2 - do you think it might be worthwhile
to buy MS Win XP with SP2 on it? Money is not an issue.

If I were to do that, would I get around potential problems I could have by
d/l SP2 and installing it on my current Win XP SP1 system?

I'm not a computer expert so forgive me if this is a dumb question. (I once
asked a friend where the rewind button was on my CD ROM).

Thanks,
m"

You should search for your last post. Things should be kept in one
thread otherwise it's hard to know what others have posted and why
duplicate. I for one answered it, and maybe others have as well. Use
google to search for it. But a better suggestion is don't use the web
interface which is awkward. Use a newsreader. XP has one built in,
Outlook Express. Here is a link to information on how to set it up to
read newsgroups. You will find it a much much better way.

Mischele:
With respect to your question about installing SP2...

I really don't think you have to be particularly nervous about installing
the SP2 download. In virtually every case the download/install proceeds
without incident. It's really not a difficult task, believe me. If you're
knowledgeable enough to access this newsgroup and post a query to it, I'm
reasonably certain you're knowledgeable enough to install SP2 on your
computer. It's really not any more difficult than installing virtually any
piece of software on your computer and I'm reasonably sure you've installed
this or that program before, no?

Even if, as you say, money is not an issue, I really can't see the wisdom of
incurring the expense of purchasing a retail copy of XP/SP2 in this
situation. There might be other reasons why you *might* want to do so, but
this is not one of them.

Having said all this, things can go wrong. You have to understand that. No
one, surely not I, can give you assurance that installing SP2 will be
absolutely without problems. S*** happens. But it's highly likely that the
SP2 install will be problem-free. As in any major software install, it would
be prudent to backup whatever personal files are important to you before
undertaking the install.

And just so you can be more confident about this, why don't you contact Dell
and inquire if they think there would be any problem(s) installing SP2 on
your Dell computer?

Hello, Excellent advice given.
A note concerning finding post in a web newsgroup. Use the search function
and type your name" one used for posting" in this case "mischele" in the
group that the post was made. You will find every post you made in this
group.
The rewind button may also be found. {:~)
Take Care.

Thank you all again. I do appreciate your help!

It's just that I have heard so many bad things about SP2 - including here on
this forum.

I have to get over the fear and just do it, LOL.

Thanks again,
m

Only a very tiny subset of all XP users access this newsgroup. Further,
people with no problems tend not to post. So, while some people seem to
have lots and lots of issues, most do not.
