It's only Word 2007 that has changed the way things work. If you had
the problem for over a year - you are presumably using an older
version which hasn't changed - unless you changed it.

Apparently you've not been guided in the right direction or haven't
looked for the right option - understandable as it isn't as clear
as it could [and should] be. However, what you are in search of is
most likely located by:
A) Click the Office Button,
B) Click the Word Options... Button,
C) Select Advanced from the categories list,
D) In Editing Options (the top section) put a check in the Typing
Replaces Selection checkbox.
As you've found, Word has been radically redesigned & the
re-learning curve is steeper for some than others, but _most_ of
the "old standbys" are there and work pretty much as always
