And another thing .. why for the past few months can I NOT, in WORD,
highlight a part of a passage and press the space bar and have it GONE ? Nor
the Backspace key?? I have to highlight and then hit the Delete key. Have I
'bumped' something and changed a setting I cannot now find? Yes, I've looked.

Apparently you've not been guided in the right direction or haven't looked
for the right option - understandable as it isn't as clear as it could [and
should] be. However, what you are in search of is most likely located by:

A) Click the Office Button,
B) Click the Word Options... Button,
C) Select Advanced from the categories list,
D) In Editing Options (the top section) put a check in the Typing Replaces
Selection checkbox.

As you've found, Word has been radically redesigned & the re-learning curve
is steeper for some than others, but _most_ of the "old standbys" are there
and work pretty much as always:)

"D) In Editing Options " Praise the Lord and pass the salami!! Cause actually
it's been longer than a few months ..I lied (sniff) it's been over a YEAR!!
Thank you thank you , cause that's a pain! " but _most_ of the "old
standbys" are there
and work pretty much as always:)"
Thank God! Now, leave it alone!! LOL

It's only Word 2007 that has changed the way things work. If you had the
problem for over a year - you are presumably using an older version which
hasn't changed - unless you changed it.

That fact came out in another thread. He's using Word 2003.
