Another installation is already in progress Error message

I get this Error Meassage when I try to install ANY new software on my system
now....."Another installation is already in progress. You must wait until
that application is done to start a new one." How do I see where this "so
called" application that is "supposed" to be running is located AND how do
I stop it????
