Another IE Back Button Problem/Page Loading Problem

G

Guest

I am running XP and IE6 SP2.
The problem that I am having only happens on particular pages such as ebay
and other similar pages.

1st symptom is that when navigating in ebay I cannot return to the previous
page when viewing an item. I can click on the back button and it will make
the click sound and appear to move back but then it just stops as if it has
loaded a page. Sometimes if I click the back button twice it will work or
take me back two pages.

2nd symptom also most easily describable in ebay is that when I go to the
home page the secondary images do not load. The ones that vary everytime you
go to the page. I end up with an error message in their place which states
something to the effect that the page you have requested may not be available
and warns that it may be the result of your browser settings. Everything
elso on the page works fine and looks fine just that one section of the page
does not load.

These two problems seem to be related and may be result of my settings but I
cannot figure out what is different. This just started happening with in the
last two weeks. I have done extensive searches in the KB and google to no
avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Dan

Hi Phong :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Back Button not working or Grayed out

Internet Browsing
http://www.santarosa.k12.fl.us/parents/TechTips.htm

Grayed out Buttons and Menu Items that Don't Work:

It is a convention in many Windows programs and in the popular browsers to
"gray out" items that currently aren't applicable. So, if you think your
BACK button isn't working, it may be because in that particular instance it
isn't applicable. For example, if you just opened your browser and this was
the first page you viewed, then there isn't a page to go back to, so the
BACK button is grayed out.

Is the site or page opening in a new window? Opening in a new widow can
disable the Back button. In all dominant browsers, webmasters using the <a
target="_blank"> tag to force a
link to open in a new window breaks the Back button. The new window does
not retain the browser history of the previous window, so the "Back" button
is disabled. It does sound as it this might be what is happening on these
sites.

Well, I tried/looked at all of them and none of them resolved the problem.

Let me try and explain my problem a little more.

For the first problem:
The back button works but instead of advancing back to the previous page it
hangs. Usually it will make a clicking noise when it stop load what was
supposed to be the last page.

Second problem which I am fairly certian is related to first:
When I load the opening page in ebay or other similar pages it will not load
all the images/adds. When if fails to load the image it displays the error
in its place and as each one fails to load it makes the clicking sound that
is made when one clicks on a link. This also occurs on the search pages with
in ebay where some of the ebay related adds do not load. Usually they are
the adds that vary everytime you load the page or seasonally or based on
cookies etc...

The only suggestion that had any effect was changing the settings for the
active x controls. But it still didn't fix the problem it altered the way it
appeared as the microsoft error message didn't show up it just remained
white. When I clicked the back button after the page had loaded, a second
click sound would occur and the microsoft error messages would appear before
the browser advanced to the previous page. So I would think its something
related to active x settings or other settings.

This is not serious problem but it is frustrating that I cannot fix it.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated,
Dan

Hi phong :)

A few details might help...

When did you start having the problem? Before or after you installed SP2?
Do you have MSN Messenger installed? If so, do you use it?
What is the exact wording of the error message you are getting?
When you open the link in ebay, does it open in a second window?

I installed SP2 back in september and have had no problems since the intitial
ones that plagued everyone.

Its funny you ask about MSN messenger. I would say about the time this
started happening I was chatting with the GF on Messenger and she sent a
prompt about playing some game through messenger. To play I needed to update
my version of Messenger. So I did, well at that point I noticed how the old
version did not seem to have been uninstalled when the newer version was
installed. I noticed the problem with ebay and other pages not allowing me to
go back(which seems to happen with all double click adds, it happens on
weather.com also). I have since uninstalled the new version of messenger and
the old version, which I assume is bundled/connected with Outlook, has begun
running again. Problem still persists.

When I am trying to go back on these pages that incorrectly load, I can
pulldown the drop down on back button and it is usually filled up with
several doubleclick.com add pages.

The page cannot be displayed.

Error Message:
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.
Followed the ubiquitous: Please try the following...

I tried changing my settings across domains as recommended by the other
poster but it did aleviate the problem either.

Thanks for your help,
Dan

Hi Dan :)

Thank you, the additional information is very helpful. The fact that you
were able to open the page to start with, but, can't go back, seems to
indicate that you do not have a problem with access to the page.

Uninstall the old version of Messenger from the Add/Remove Programs and see
if that helps. If so, try reinstalling only the new update version of
Messenger and see if it will work that way.

Another aspect is that when you got the new game, it downloaded a Cookie on
your system that is being seen as some sort of parasite or malware, a 'phone
home' type of bug that is being blocked by your HOSTS file, or perhaps
SpyBot, or Zone Alarm after you have accessed the second link, and it won't
allow you to go any further.

Here is some other information that might help:

Can't access msn.com - ebay or other .com sites

1.) Check HOSTS file, located @/in %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc

(Open it with Notepad.exe and see if those sites are equated to ANY IP
address - this is because this file can either speedup OR block sites.
Equating a site's URL to 127.0.0.1 will block that site, and/or possibly
equating it to a REAL IP address for the purposes of speeding up a site can
misfire IF the site owners change the IP address of that URL for said
concerned website)

The HOSTS file needs only 1 entry -

localhost 127.0.0.1

(And, you can get away without one period, IF your system is not attached to
a LAN/WAN network... a standalone system can operate without HOSTS period!)

2.) This area in the registry, for HOSTS file databasepath redirections:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

The default from Microsoft for the "DataBasePath" entry is
%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc (as mentioned above in #1)... if it is
otherwise, change it to that, or (using C:\WINNT for Windows 2000 or
C:\WINDOWS for Windows XP/2003) to C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc

3.) IPSecurity Policies in secpol.msc - this can be used for the purposes of
blocking out sites, i.e.-> A "poor man's" firewall of sorts.

4.) Any firewall program you use - Zone Alarm, for instance/example, can
block out sites and their cookies (which some sites require for using their
stuff).

EDIT PART> Adding to #4, some sites NEED you to take their cookies and 3rd
party cookies too... you might want to look @ or OVERRIDE your cookies
policies in 'Internet Options' via Control Panel again & the Privacy tab
too!

5.) IE Restricted Zones via Control Panel> Internet Options> Security
Tab> and clicking on the "Restricted sites" to highlight them and then edit
it
using the SITES button.

6) Try disabling the XP SP2 firewall and see if that helps.

Perhaps someone else might know more about the double clicking situation
than I, and can offer more detailed information.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps
