Another bad patch that kills performance?

Remember the patch that came out a month or two ago that once
installed, you would click on Outlook or IE and it would take HOURS to
actually load the app? Anyways....is there another crappy patch out
lately that is doing the same? Like a good lamb I've applied all
critical updates to my WinXP SP1 Pro system. Here lately, from the
time I turn my PC on until I can actually use it went from less than
60 seconds to about 3-4 minutes. Just want to know if others are
having severe performance issues at startup after applying all
critical updates.

Thanks!

Ditto! I noticed this in Windows XP Home Edition.

Using an Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz HT, 512MB DDR 333, Western Digital 120GB
ATA/100 7200 RPM hard drive, and an 128MB AGP video card.

This big delay problem did not occur until I installed the recent updates
that the Windows XP Automatic Update prompted me to install and reboot the
system.

Hi, Joe.

It would help to know what the critical update was. You can check its number
in Add/Remove programs, or the compressed version (Blue file name) in
Windows Explorer.

My computer got faster after the updates this last week.
compaq presario 6450nx 521mb desktop with a 1992 monitor.

I've just finished installing latest Critical Updates, and my machine is
still fast, check you havn't got any "bad" drivers trying to load on the
system slowing it down

Yes. I had to re-install several hardware drivers from original CD after
the latest Windows Updates, including chipset, display adaptor, NIC and
sound card drivers. Actually in my case I noticed terrible network and
video performance.

Do a system restore prior to when the updates were
installed. To find out which update is giving you
problems, install one update at a time to see which one
it was.

How does one check to see if they have any "Bad"
drivers?

if you right click on My Computer, you will get system properties up, on the
tabs at the top, click Hardware, then click on the "Device Manager" button,
If there is anything with exclamation mark by it, if so, right click on it,
and it will tell you the problem
:)

Have you examined the bootlog file for any hints?

(in msconfig set the BOOT.INI option of bootlog to have one generated)
