I notice many of the posts are under
(e-mail address removed)

I assume this prevents the Span harvesters. How do you set up that address?

You can set your "shown" name and e-address to anything you want by opening
Tools>Accounts>Properties. Make sure to use some non-existent name after the
@ sign so that someone else doesn't get spammed. The one you asked about is
just a default address.

You have posted here with what appears to be a legitimate address. I hope it
is a disposable one because; It only takes a post or two for it to be
harvested and the spam to start.

In Outlook Express, goto Tools>Accounts. Select the News tab & your new
account name. Select properties and you can type anything you like in the
email address...

No, that's not what that is. The posters with that address are
not using a newsreader, but are using the clumsy Microsoft
web-based interface for reading newsgroups. That's the default
return address which is created there.

How to use a fake return address in a newsreader depends on what
newsreader you use. You are apparently using Outlook Express, so
go to Tools | Accounts, double-click your news account, and enter
whatever fake address you want in the E-mail address field.

The users of "anonymous" are, for the most part, newbies who are using a web
interface as their newsgroup newsreader. A web interface is awkward, to say
the least, and makes for difficulty in following a thread.

Those in the know will set up OE as their newsgroup newsreader, and will
create a fake newsgroup email address in Tools / Accounts.

I see that you have OE as your newsreader. That's good. As I think you
realize, you are inviting spam because you seem to be using your real email
address in your newsgroup posts.

Thanks to the poster and responder. I just did this for usenet posts. Now my
question is: do I have to do this for email also? Can spammers harvest my
address from email also, or just usenet posts?

Hi Michael:

You MUST use your real email address for regular email. Unfortunately, if
you have recently been using your real email address in newsgroup posts,
then many of the spammers have already harvested your real address. So not
only should you create a fake address for NG posts, you should create a
block of all incoming email that uses your former email address and then
create a new one.

Also, a message rule that may work for you is one that deletes from the
server any incoming email that does NOT have your (new) email address in the
TO or CC line. This stops a lot of spam because spammers often use
techniques that do not require the use of your email address to get to your
inbox.

Hope this helps.

No, you don't have to, and you generally should *not*. If you do,
and you send someone a message, that person would not be able to
reply directly to you (the reply would go to the fake address).

The only way someone could reply to you would be if he knew your
real address and manually inserted it into the message.

Can spammers
harvest my address from email also, or just usenet posts?

Spammers can't harvest your address from E-mail unless you send
them E-mail. They have to get the message to see your address.
Anyone can get a newsgroup message, but only the addressees get
E-mail messages. That's why you need to do this for newsgroup
messages, but not for E-mail.
