annoying scrolling

I've got an annoyance when using Excel. Sometimes when I attempt to
select a series or rows that extend beyond the size of the screen, my
machine will scroll so fast when I reach the end of the viewed area
that it goes well beyond where I want it to stop. Is there a simple
way to deal with this?

Russ

Start at the bottom and work your way up.

Click on the topleft cell and use the scrollbars to go to the bottom left corner
and shift click on that.

Find out the address and (A2:B999) and type that into the address bar.

Select your first row - hold down the shift key - then use the page up
or down key to move down a page at a time, or if your mouse has a
scroll wheel on it, put the pointer somewhere in the spreadsheet then
press and hold the wheel down and move your mouse in the direction you
want to scroll. The further you move from the "bulls eye" the faster
the scroll speed.

You get greater control by using the keyboard. If you want to select a
range or cells, then hold the <shift> key down and press the arrow
keys, or for larger movements you can press <Page Up> or <Page Down>.
When you have selected all the cells you need, release the <shift> key
- if you want to extend the range by just a few more rows, hold down
<shift> again and press the arrow keys, then release <shift>. There are
other keyboard shortcuts like this - look up Keyboard Shortcuts in the
Help index.

Hope this helps.

Thanks forthe suggestions. This has troubled me for a long while and
your helps - especially the keyboard ideas will work just fine.

I have a related question, the answer of which I can't find in the Help index.
If holding <shift> is the way to select cells, what is the key to drag
through Excel? By dragging I mean dragging to extend series or to fill, like
you would click on the lower right corner of a selected cell with your mouse.

Your answer would save me a lot of annoyance. Thanks!

If you wish to "drag down to copy" a cell, as far down as the column on the
left (or right) has data, *double* click the fill handle.

If you wish to copy down when there is no adjoining column to control the
copy range, *BUT* you know the address of the last cell to copy to, then:

Select the cell, say A1,
Click in the 'Name Box' and type the last cell address, say A10000,
Hold down <Shift>,
Hit <Enter>
Then,
Hit <F2>,
Then,
Hit <Ctrl> <Enter>.
