Annoying entry on taskbar

I have a persistent flashing symbol ( green symbol going to red circle with
diagonal stripe) then a small red rectangle with a white message space
appears bottom right of screen claiming that my computer system is infected
by a virus etc. It isn't because I scanned it with several anti-spyware
programs.

How can I remove this nuisance?

An anti spyware app is completely different to an AV app.
Having said that you are allmost certainly infected with malaware / trojan

Well you can start with an on line scan at
http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/home.htm
Followed by SpyBot and Adaware, you could also try MS Defender
Unless you are able to supply a file name, you are relying on someone
recognising the icon, which I don't
