Annoying ActiveX messages

Every time I go from one page to another of a website I get these annoying
messages about activeX. About 5 of them before I get to the actual place I
want to go.
One reads.....Do you want to allow software such as ActiveX controls and
plug-ins. Yes or no.
Another reads.....A script is accessing some software(an ActiveX control) on
this page which has been marked safe for scripting. Do you want to allow
this, yes or no.
If I say yes to all then I haver to go through about 5 before I get to the
page, if I say no then it is quicker. I have been through internet explorer
to try and knock these off but have had no sucess. They weren't always there,
they have only come up in the last 6 months or so, and they are so annoying,
it takes ages if you are searching through a site, especially ebay, as you
need to go from one page to another quickly sometimes to bid on an auction.
Can anyone help.

Well you can always turn ActiveX on and off in IE settings. Also, consider
Mozilla Firefox which does not have Active X and I have been able to use it
for all the websites that I go to with the exception of Windows Update and
it is a free download without adware/spyware/malware. Amazing in this day
and age-- one caveat is be careful about installing plugins and extensions
since these are made by users and the Mozilla organization does not have
much control over them and you still need to be careful where you click on
web-links. Finally, you can even go to other Microsoft sites including
msnbc.com for news if you want to. I hope this helps you some and have a
great day!

That sounds good, how do I know the activeX off, I have been througfht
Internet explorer several times, but can't find anything about it on there.
PS. This message happens on every single page, even these newsgroup pages.

You need to go into the control panel that has Internet Explorer Settings
and check the configuration of the different zones. There are four zones
that are: regular Internet, local intranet, Trusted internet, and restricted
internet. You need to check these zones and customize the settings the way
that you want them. For example, click on Internet and customize it and
there you will find the ability to not allow ActiveX to run. I would
suggest checking all these zones and customizing as needed. Do not let the
restricted zones run anything. Check to make sure baddies (spyware,
malware, adware) have not gotten into the trusted zone where they can do a
lot of damage if there are lax security settings. Also, check for programs
that you do not recognize in Add/Remove Programs for spyware and I would
suggest you download, install, and run Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy,
and SpywareBlaster to help stop baddies. Finally, make sure you have a
firewall and an updated antivirus and customize it so it scans all files and
run it to look for viruses. Good Luck and I hope this helps you.

I found what the problem was, everything was on prompt, no wonder everything
took me so long to get everywhere. I have altered all the prompts now to
disable, I will see how that goes. I have disabled all the stuff in the
restricted zone, most of them were disabled anyway.
I checked the add remove programs and I recognise all the programs as ones I
have loaded on here. However there are loads of entries....
Windows XP hotfix and then a number
or
Windows XP hotfix (SPI) see Q(and then a number)
These look like Questions from Microsoft that I have asked, do I remove these.

I have got BT Yahoo Anti spy, and have checked today for spyware etc and
everything is ok.
Thanks

You also want to check your settings in the other Internet zones and make
sure dangerous web-pages have not entered into the low security area of the
safety zone.

I know I am being too thick, but where do I find the other internet Zones. If
you mean the intranet and trusted ones, I have done as you said with them as
well.
Brande

Yes that is what I mean -- Internet Zone 1
Intranet Zone 2
Trusted Sites Zone 3
Restricted Sites Zone 4

You have made restricted into a custom mode that is even tighter security
than the High Zone too -- correct
FYI: Also you may want to empty your cookies, temporary internet files
include off-line content as well and clear the history if you have not done
so yet --- limit cache size to no more than 77 mb's -- tighten cookie control
settings -- may want to enable pop-up blocker via this area as well
Finally you may want to use Mozilla Firefox because as a default browser
because it does not have the Active X security problems
It was a pleasure helping you and let me know if you have more issues with
this by continuing this thread.

Hi,

Start/Run/Regedit:

Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones

Added info, depending on your needs:

There a fifth setting in Internet Explorer 6 called my computer which is
diabled by default. If you want to enable this, go to the key listed above
and look for the data value called "flags". Its default value is 33
("Flags"=dword: 0X00000021 ) . Chage its value 1 and reboot. Now you should
see an option called my computer in Internet Explorer 6 Zone settings.

Thanks Kelly. That is news to me. Is there any reason that one should
enable this setting?
