Animation: Rotate Text Box / Temporary Objects

J

John Michl

I have a slide that contains six horizontal rectangles and six vertical
rectangles all with text. The text in the vertical rectangles is
rotated 90 degrees.

Request 1:
I'd like to set up some custom animation with the vertical boxes that
first displays them horizontally so it is easier to read the text, then
rotates the box 90 degrees and drops it to its final resting position.

Request 2:
Before showing the six veritical bars (which would displayed one a time
with a three second delay), I'd like to show a separate text box that
describes the six vertical bars. Then it would disappear and the bars
would begin to appear. How could I do this?

Thanks.

John,

which version of PowerPoint do you use? In PowerPoint 2002 or 2003 this
should be possible.

1) To rotate and move a text box, combine the Emphasis Animation "Spin" with
a Custom Animation Path.

2) To temporarily display a text box, use an Entrance Animation ("Appear" or
"Fade in"), click on the box again and assign an Exit animation ("Disappear"
or "Fade out").

Just play around a bit with the animation settings.

Kind regards,
Ute

Thanks. I'm using PPT 2002.

I tried using Spin but could quite figure out how to get the box to
start in the appropriate position. For instance, the text box needs to
start with a normal horizontal orientation then spin 90 degrees to it
final vertical orientation.

In the custom animation task pane, there's an "amount" box (where it says
360). Click that to expand drop-down options. Type 90 into the Custom box or
select Quarter turn from the list of options. Click clockwise or
counterclockwise, whichever is appropriate.

Is that what you're looking for?

Thanks. With a bit of fiddling I was able to get an exceptable
solution. This is what happens.
1) Box is vertical at Point A
2) Box rotates 90 degrees (Spin) and moves to Point B (Motion Path)
3) Stays put for about 5 seconds
4) Box rotates 90 degrees and returns to Point A

What I'd like to be able to do is have the box start at Point B already
rotated and then drop to Point A. However I want the stationary
(non-animated version) to show the box at Point A not B. Is that
possible?

I guess I don't understand what you mean by "the non-animated" version.
Sure, you can have an animated version and a non-animated version of the
slide. Somehow I think I'm missing something, though.

Oh, and if you want the box to start out already rotated, just use PPT's
rotation tools (grab and drag on the green handle that shows up when you
select a textbox or choose Draw/Rotate or Flip) to start the textbox in the
position you want it to start in. Then apply the spin emphasis to the
rotated box.

I think I'm getting lost in all the different points. :) I can't quite
figure out if you want your box to start horizontal like a regular textbox,
vertical with the text like this --
v
e
r
t
i
c
a
l

t
e
x
t

-- or if you want the box to be rotated 90 degrees clockwise or
counterclockwise before any animation is even applied.

Hi John,

I think, I understand what you mean. You want to print the box in position
A, but don't want your audience to see animation steps 1 and 2, right? Then
add the Exit animation "Disappear" before step 1. Set timing options for
step 2 to a very short time, e.g. 0.1sec and insert a Entrance animation
"Appear" before step 3. In edit (and print) view, the box is vertical, but
in slide show view an invisible box rotates and becomes visible when it's
horizontal. Your audience will not notice the short delay.

Kind regards,
Ute

Thanks, Ute
That's exactly what I needed. I never considered starting with a
disappear!

Thanks to all who helped out. Though some of the ideas didn't help me
solve this particular problem, they gave me new insight to use on other
animations.

ahhhhhh. I'm glad you knew, Ute, because I obviously didn't!

That's the benefit of having so many sets of eyes looking at a problem.
