Hi
I have just bought a new PC with XP Pro.
When I press the @ key, it returns a " character and visa-versa.
Changing the language between English UK and English US does not seem to help.
I would apreciate anybody's help.
Thank you.

You need to tell us what keys you depress on your keyboard
to get these charachters, e.g. "Shift+2".

Thank you Pegasus.
I press the key with @ on it and it returns a " character.
And visa-versa.

Yes, I knew this already. However, the @ and the " characters are
in different locations, depending on the keyboard you have. You
really need to follow my suggestions and tell us what you press,
e.g. Shift+2, AltGR+2 or whatever. If you don't then I won't
continue this discussion.

I assume you changed language in Control panel>Regional and language
settings.

Did you also click the Languages Tab and then Details?

This gives you the option to choose input language AND the type of
keyboard.

Sorry Pegasus.
The @ symbol is on the key that also has the ' symbol on it, the second key
to the left of the enter key.
he " symbol is above the number 2.

It appears that you are set up for an American keyboard. Have you seen
my post?

It seems to me that the OP's keyboard is mismarked. I have never seen one
which expects you to press SHIFT+' to get @ or SHIFT+2 to get ".

The keyboard has the wrong key-caps.

On a standard keyboard, one key is marked (@ / 2) and another key is marked
(" / ' )

In other words, the at-symbol is an upper-case 2 (on the typewriter portion
of the keyboard) and the quotation mark is an upper-case apostrophe (next to
the [ENTER] key).

Compare your keyboard layout with a pic of a normal keyboard.

If, however, you have a laptop, all bets are off. Laptop manufacturers move
keys all over the place.

Control Panel Regional and Language Keyboards and Language.

Change the setting to UK keyboard. Alternately, unplug the keyboard and
plug in a US layout keyboard.

As HeyBub suggests, the keys on your keyboard may be incorrectly
marked. On a standard US keyboard, @ is above the number 2
whereas " is the shifted key to the left of the Enter key. Yours appears
to be back to front.

You now have two options:
- Replace the keyboard, or
- Remap the keys (http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/msklc.mspx).

Post again if you need any assistance when remapping the keys.

No, it's a UK keyboard.

Ours are marked [ @ / ' ] and [" / 2 ].

The OP did mention "changing the language between English UK and English
US", so it's likely he's in the UK. I'm amazed so few people noticed
that, or are aware of the difference..

To nojo: Tom is right, you need to change the keyboard layout to United
Kingdom as well as the language. Hope you get it sorted -- if not,
please post back :-)

I already explained to nojo that he needed to change the keyboard layout
as well as the input language in a much earlier post, which he seems to
have ignored.

You did indeed, Smirnoff, apologies for not mentioning that.

Not having a go at you Nightowl, just think that nojo has sorted his
problem and has not bothered to give any feedback.

Why don't they at least say whether it worked or not?

We would all benefit from that.
