Still testing paper brands in my iP4000.

The Canon paper shows slight impressions of the metal wheels in the
paper. I have to look hard, basically catching the reflection of a
light source in the paper, but they're there. Epson paper - NO track
marks.

WTF????

Sounds like the printer might be damaged. Is it new, or refurbished?

Brand new. Only seen about 20 sheets run through it.

Clearly, the Canon and Epson papers are qualitatively different on some
level - two objectionable symptoms, happening on one brand and not the
other...

The Epson paper isn't compatible with the Canon printer. You won't get track marks on it unless you put it in an Epson printer. ;-)

And the track marks help, really - I look a printed the piece of paper,
follow the direction of the tracks, and that's how I remember to put
the next sheet in skinny edge first. ;-)
