Analog audio cables from optical drive

So what's up with those analog audio cables that connect from an optical
drive to the soundcard (or onboard audio connector if there is no separate
sound card)? Do we still need to connect them? Seems to me I've heard that
they haven't really been needed since Windows 95, as all audio goes over the
PCI bus now. I'd sure like to get rid of any extra cabling inside my case
that I possibly can, so I'd really like to know. Do you still connect the
analog audio cables in your own builds?

I used to use them until recently myself, but i stopped as it was adding
cable clutter. They are not nesscary as Windows XP takes all the audio
through the IDE cables in digital format.

The opposite. :)

I would like to know, how to connect audio cables from my three optical
drives to the sound card. Is it possible? I want to listen music-CDs on all
my drives.

Have you tried going to Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Disk
Management, then right click the optical drive, select properties, go
to the properties tab and check the enable digital cd audio for this
device? You do not need the hardwires.

He doesn't NEED them - but why get the IDE channels busy with
time-critical audio data, when there's an alternative path for it?

It's not much, but it's steady.

I prefer the analog cable also myself, for that reason.
