Unknown errors in Windows Mail are often due to interference from
an antivirus program. What if any antivirus programs do you have?

For a temporary fix, download and install this hotfix, with Windows
Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version
of Vista or a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version first.
This hotfix is also available as past of the Vista SP1 update, but that
takes longer to install.

After downloading the hot fix I did not get the following on either the
32-bit or 64-bit version: Note If the Install ActiveX Control command is not
displayed in the Information Bar menu, you will need to use the Alternate
Validation Method described below. The Alternate Validation Method did not
work with my system.

3. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Install.

Similar situation here but it's my deleted items folder where the problem
occurs. In drop down folder list, it's showing I have over 300 deleted
messages in the deleted items folder. Right clicking or going to the Edit
drop down to "empty the deleted folder" gives me the message of "An Unknown
Error Has Occurred". However, when I actually open the deleted items folder,
it appears totally empty!
I've checked out many of these discussion posts looking for a solution and
tried a few fixes but none work, not even the positive sounding advice from
Gary VanderMolen.

Steve,

Maybe you can help me, I see you've helped many others. I have the
irritating "ghost email" that has been in my inbox for two months now. When
previewing the email it says there is nothing to be displayed. It cannot be
deleted, moved to another folder, nothing. I have tried using the alt, E, D,
and that doesn't work for me. Any other suggestions?

Hi I just had the same problem but found if you click and drag it to the
"deleted" box you can then delet it like normal, well I could anyway. Hope it
works for you too!
