An unknown error has occured

Some messages in my inbox can't be displayed all of a sudden and when I try
to move or delete them I get the unknown error messags.

I am suddenly having the same problem with an outgoing message. I can
receive mail, but this e-mail seems to be stuck and will not delete. It just
says "An unknown error has occured". No outgoing mail will go out.

This is a recurring Windows Mail problem.
There is some evidence that replacing a non-compatible antivirus
program with a compatible one will reduce the incidence of this
problem. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or
Norton security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled.
Replace with a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

As far as the existing stuck messages in the inbox, it is best
to just ignore it for now. If the problem becomes worse, or
you can't ignore it, upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

If you have messages stuck in the Outbox, do the following:
First, delete or move as many of those messages as you can.
There will be one undeletable message.
Download and run the WMUtil program:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil
Use WMUtil's Clear Outbox tool.
Be sure to read and follow the instructions on that download page.

Sorry I am new at this.
I also have the same problem . I can't get rid of deleted mail. In the
deleted folder there are 75 mails . there are no TO and FROM on them and the
message is gone. This thing is 1 week old and already I am disgusted. What is
WMUtil program. ??? like I say I am new.

Do you know if F-Secure (Charter's High Speed Security Suite) is compatible
with Windows Vista and Windows Mail? How do you use Windows Live Mail? I
purchased a new Gateway computer 2 weeks ago and have struggled with getting
Windows Mail to work consistently with my account. I have a lot of folders
and e-mails. I can open the *.eml files when I go to Windows Explorer, but
sometimes it works and most times it doesn't when I open Windows Mail. My
wife has very few e-mails and folders and doesn't have any problems. I've
turned off the in and outbound scanning on the McAfee program that was
preinstalled.

Just turning off the mail scanning on McAfee's antivirus is not sufficient.
McAfee will need to be uninstalled completely. F-Secure is compatible,
but be sure to turn off its mail scanning option. For more on the
reason for this, see http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3.

Windows Live Mail is a standard email client similar to Windows Mail,
plus Hotmail access, plus a bunch of fixes that WM doesn't have.
You can try it out, and if you don't like it, uninstall, and WM will be
back.

Thanks for the prompt response. Uninstalling McAfee doens't answer why my
wife's user name works, but who cares as long it fixes my mail problem.

How do I access Windows Live Mail? Will I need to import my messages? It
appears that everytime I open Windows Mail that a couple of folders (with
longer names) get duplicated with different characters at the end.

As you can tell I'm frustrated. Please advise if I should try Windows Live
Mail before uninstalling McAffee.

Thanks,

Ed

Uninstalled McAffee and Windows Mail worked. Installed F-Secure and no
problems yet even with e-mail scan on.

Thanks,

Good, but as Julian indicated, email scanning should be turned off for
any antivirus program.

Hi all again.
Found a solution without a lot of hassle. go to your deleted folder and and
try and delete.. Then exit windows mail. Bring it back on and do it again til
the mails are gone. I did this and now my deleted mails get deleted like they
should.

I am having the same difficulty with Windows mail. I am wondering, My ISP
offers free virus scan from Computer associates. How does this rank compared
to the avast program you mentioned? Does Microsoft recommend Avast as the
best compatable free program?

Thank You

Microsoft does not rate antivirus programs.
I've been using a free AV from Computer Associates for five
months already, with no problems.
