NAME: Cadkas PDF Reader
VERS: 1.0
AUTH: Cadkas
SITE: http://www.cadkas.de/downengpdf5.php
PLIC: Freeware / Cripple Ware?*
BLIC: Freeware / Cripple Ware?*
INFO:
PDF Reader is a free program to view, modify and print pdf files. It is very
small, only about 1 MByte to download and will fit on one disk. You can
open, view, zoom and print PDF files. You can also modify pdf files (but you
can not save them in the free version). You can add, change and delete text
and pictures and print it out.
The big brother: PDF Editor

* If I read the site correctly, their PDF reader is infact a crippled
version (No Save) of their PDF editor. For wat it is wort: I found it to be
quite faster (Though stil not lightningfast) as Acrobat reader. Just taak a
look and decide for your self if it is a keeper or one for the cylindrical
archive. I have not decided myself yet.

No save ? What about if I print the modified doc with cutePDF ?

This program has been mentioned in this newsgroup before. But thanks for
bringing it up again. With the security holes in Adobe 5x and earlier,
folks are looking for alternatives especially their PC's are NOT capable of
running the Adobe Reader 6.x bloatware. (Adobe Reader 6.x will not run on
my old PII computer with Win 98. Adobe does not even recommend it!)

Unfortunately, I have found that PDF Reader is a terrible program for
reading PDF's. I don't think the program was ever designed for that
purpose. Have you tried navigating between pages? It is very awkward. You
must click on very small arrow icons. IMHO, it is really crippled demo
software for the big payware$$ version PDF Editor.

But if you don't want the bloatware from Adobe, it is a choice for Windows
users.

For Windows, I prefer using GsView and Ghostscript. Loads fast and easy to
use to read PDF files. Bet as mentioned before it does NAG you once at the
start of the program to donate. If that bothers you, install "Press that
Freakin Button" freeware program.

For Linux users there are LOTS of great FREE PDF reader programs like xPDF.
Many are open source as well!

By the way, the version is actually 2.2. The web site has not been updated.

I also find it annoying that you cannot use the PgUP and PgDn keys on the
keyboard to navigate between pages...

If you read a lot off PDF's, I would stay away from this program.

Well, I think I just might keep it in my archive for those who only read an
occational PDF file, as is is quite faster then Adobe's

Peronaly, I don't like GhostScript at all. Not back in the days I used a
mac, and not now. My main problem with it, I guess, is the need for
Ghostscript to be installed in the root. I even understand why a program
need this, but to me, this is an act of bad programmeship, even if it *is* a
port from linux/unix.

I also dispice applications who think they can dictate the folders you have
in the 'My Documents' directory. "Do they realy think I sort my documents as
"my pictures", My Ebooks" "My Music"? My Ass!
It is why I don't like Acrobat reader, this reason counts even more than the
bloatware it is. I know there was a delete 'My eBooks' plug-in once, but I
never found the site again. Maybe someone here can help me out out?

Ghostscript does not need to be installed in the root, this can be
changed, it just has to be done manually. The Ghostscript authors just
deemed it good and right to put it there since that's where it's been
since the beginning. BTW, most, not all, but most third party PDF
programs will use either the Adobe SDK or Ghostscript for PDF creation
or reading. Writing a program to directly create PDF's or to rasterize a
PDF file (read) from scratch would be a daunting task to say the least.
It's mostly just cheaper and easier to license the Adobe stuff, or to
use Ghostscript under either GPL or GNU (version dependant).

GSView, AFAIK, looks to the registry to look for the latest version
installed, and will use it from whichever path is listed there.

Well my only complaint with Ghostscript is that it is slower rendering
engine than the one Adobe uses. It takes longer for each page to be
rendered or displayed on my old PII PC. Other than that it works fine.

As far as Adobe products are concerned, I prefer using the free Adobe
Acrobat eBook Reader v2.2 (released on Oct 25, 2001) for reading PDF's. It
as a slick interface and will even read aloud your PDF's. (Too bad it is
no longer on the Adobe web site!) But I suspect it suffers from the same
security flaws found in Adobe Acrobat Reader v5.x and earlier.

So for my old slow PC, it looks like I only have two options to avoid using
the security flawed version of Acrobat Reader (v5.x and earlier) ---
GsView/Ghostscript or PDFReader.

PDFReader is hard to use when reading PDF's (despite its name). So I am
left with GsView/Ghostscript until someone else makes a free PDF reader.

Thnx for the info, I'll try it again. (I havn't tried the latest versions.
But I had some troubles the last time I tried to put it in the program files
directory)

You can put it there, but you'll need to change the registry entries
that reference its location. A good for instance here is the PDFCreator
program. He includes a copy of Ghostscript and puts in one of his
subdirectories.

I prefer Acrobat Reader with plugins moved to the Optional folder and the

not as usable as Acrobat.
