An OT quickie about Nero

CK

I'm certain that most of you will have bought a cd or dvd burner, and so
have acquired a bundled copy of Nero. Is did I, yesterday.

After I installed the software, I moved the shortcuts to somewhere
significantly more sensible than just in a folder called 'Nero' (and
deleted the shortcuts that it insisted on putting on the desktop and
QuickLaunch toolbar - God, I hate that).

But now, whenever I run Nero, it decides that I need more! More! MORE!
shortcuts to itself and back comes the pikey 'Nero' folder on the Start
menu like last night's curry.

I've Googled, but all I've managed to find is that others have noticed
this as well.

Anyone here managed to stop it doing this?

TIA.

Remove the software,re-install and choose custom install and tell it
not to make any shortcuts and remake your own.
HTH :)

Whilst it's an admirable suggestion, I (tragically) didn't get any
options during the install procedure to specify whether and where to
make shortcuts. Otherwise (presumably) it'd keep making the new ones
where I actually want them - which would be greatly preferable to what
I've got now.

Thanks, though.

It's an OEM Nero 6, which is different to the OEM Nero 6 that I had
installed previously that came with Nero Wave Editor unlocked, and
didn't have this Start Menu freakishness. Weird.

Still, I've done some experimentation and it seems that it's only
launching Nero StartSmart that generates the shortcuts. If I can't stop
it doing it, I might, after I've used it for a while, decide that I can
get away with using the Nero Express shortcut instead. Or get so annoyed
with it that I uninstall the whole thing and use something else...

Know any good open source cd/dvd burning packages that work under Win2KPro?

Check for Adware/Spyware on it.Cannot remember but I think it's clean.

Also this is a great piece of kit but not free(£20)but is superb and
has it's own forum and help :)

Thanks, I'll check those out.

I downloaded 85 MB of patches to Nero last night in the vain hope that
they'd have turned off this "feature" with one of the updates. No such
luck - now if I run StartSmart it puts a shortcut on the desktop as well
as the other crap. I have three icons on the desktop, and I'm not having
their poxy update thing sitting there looking ugly. So I've deleted the
StartSmart shortcut and replaced it with one for Nero Express instead.
If I find that too limiting, I'll replace Nero with one of these others,
but I'm *never* going to launch StartSmart again.

Blech.

Thanks again.

Have you tried creating a shortcut directly to the "Nero.exe"? I don't use
the smartstart thing, but just jump straight in. All the smartstart options
are there on the menus, in a more grown up and standard fashion! Might get
around the icon problem...

I've got a couple of applications that are much the same - re-creating all
their default shortcuts each time that they're run.
(MSN Messenger and WinRAR being two that spring to mind).

My solution was set the Hidden attribute of the various shortcuts.
As i have the Windows option to display Hidden files/folders disabled, the
shortcuts are still there but don't show up any more!

I'm using one of the raft of other shortcuts that it generated instead -
it was only the StartSmart that was a problem. And the program didn't
look that nice against my remarkably stark Win2K installation anyway, as
you say. Maybe it looks nicer with a Fisher Price XP theme?

Nasty, isn't it?

I did come across that as a possible solution, but I like being able to
see hidden files, so I have that option enabled. I did try it though.
Nero just generated a new non-hidden version :(

I got a response from Nero's Technical Support people in Germany. They
suggested that "something had gone wrong with the installation" and that
I should uninstall it. Despite my suggestion that if I uninstalled it, I
would replace it with one of their competitors' products...

Well set them as system files instead then, which are normally hidden.
DOS prompt, browse to the correct folder and use "Attrib <filename> +s"
