an issue with mouse wheel in explorer

Peter

I would like to know if this is common or it's just happening with me.

If I open explorer it splits into two halves, left side shows the folder
view right shows the files.

But to use the mouse wheel to scroll in either half i first have to click.
Is this normal ? Shouldn't it activate the wheel just by moving into the
appropriate area ?
some of my other programs work okay, not MS ?

Dear Peter,

This is normal. Clicking gives the Window focus.

The tree view on the left is a SysTreeView32 child window. On the right it
is a SysListView32 child window.

I agree that clicking gives the window focus i.e the blue bar at the top
darkens and the window becomes active. Is that what you mean?

In other programs like MS word, utorrent if you open a window it becomes
active and if you just place the mouse cursor in it it activates the wheel
allowing scroll, but it seems in explorer you have to click on each half of
the window . I don't understand why it just doesn't activate the wheel upon
moving the cursor into that part of the window (which is already active)
without having to click first.
Any thoughts?

What you see is normal. You have to click first.

Unfortunately, you are all correct. XP made this one of their changes.
Moving from Win98SE to XP, this was one of the first things I noticed and
hated. I am not sure why MS decided to change the behaviour the way they did
(or find a way round it) as it is a real nuisance.
Basically, like myself, you have to live with it.
