an extension failed to initialize....using outlook 2003 email

when recieving an email with an atttachment I get the following error when I
try to open the attachment:
an extension failed to initialize. This version of Exchange only supports
version 4.0 Exchange extensions.
I do not use Exchange!

does it say which extension it is? if so, you could remove the check from
it in tools, options, other, advanced, addin.

if it says extend.dat, find and delete it (C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook)

removed the check for addin and it didn't work. all it has under the original
message is a ?.
