An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.nist.g

With Windows Vista Ultimate I am seeing the above error when I select "Update
now" in the Internet Time Settings window. I have turned off Norton 360 and
Vista firewalls. I can ping time.nist.gov (time.windows.com does not
respond). w32tm /query/peer/verbose gives:

#Peers: 1

Peer: time.nist.gov,0x9
State: Pending
Time Remaining: 0.0000000s
Mode: 0 (reserved)
Stratum: 0 (unspecified)
PeerPoll Interval: 0 (unspecified)
HostPoll Interval: 0 (unspecified)
Last Successful Sync Time: (null)
LastSyncError: 0x00000000 (Succeeded)
LastSyncErrorMsgId: 0x00000000 (Succeeded)
AuthTypeMsgId: 0x0000005A (NoAuth )
Resolve Attempts: 0
ValidDataCounter: 0
Reachability: 0

I turned on w32tm debugging, and see:

149071 09:50:01.9958968s - PeerPollingThread: PeerListUpdated
149071 09:50:01.9958968s - PeerPollingThread: waiting forever
149071 09:50:17.9948728s - W32TmServiceMain: timeout
149071 09:50:17.9948728s - W32TmServiceMain: waiting 1024.000s
149071 09:50:18.0017083s - RPC Call - Query provider status
149071 09:50:18.0017083s - TimeProvCommand([NtpClient], TPC_Query) called.

Which I would guess indicates that it has timed out. I have tried all of
the servers in the drop down list of servers; all give the same error message.

I am out of ideas.

Any help would be appreciated!

Use Google to find a public time server in your area. Type its name into
the box (you're not limited to the choices in the pulldown menu, you can
manually enter a server name). Restart the PC and see if it can sync to a
different server.

I'm not sure quite what happened, but for some reason it now seems to be
working. Thanks for response.
