"An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with <a time server>."

Is anyone else having problems with Windows XP Professional SP1 (all
updates)'s time synchronization feature? I keep geting "An error
occurred while Windows was synchronizing with..." message. I tried both
time.nist.gov and time.windows.com.

I am not running a firewall product. I do use an old Netgear RT311
router, but I don't think it blocks outgoing packages. It used to work
in the past. I saw no errors in Windows' Event logs.

Thank you in advance. :)

Don't use it. I have been using Tardis since before XP came out and never
missed a beat with it. Even runs OK on XP and sets the time on the other
machines on the lan for me, too.

Funny, I used to use Tardis before I got Windows XP. Is there a way to
add more/replace time servers to Windows XP's list?

Thank you in advance. :)

Yep. On two separate XP machines.
I keep geting "An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with..."
message. I tried both time.nist.gov and time.windows.com.

I was getting it with both yesterday, only with time.windows.com today.
I am not running a firewall product.

Me neither.
I do use an old Netgear RT311 router,

I'm using an Alacatel SpeedTouch Pro adsl modem/router.
but I don't think it blocks outgoing packages.

I know the STP doesnt, because it used to
work and it hasnt been reconfigured at all.
It used to work in the past.
Yep.

I saw no errors in Windows' Event logs.

I did find a few after I noticed the problem. Only
about 6 tho and I update the time every 12 hours.

Oh good! I am not alone. MS needs to add more and let us add more! :)

Fixing the time synchronization problem . . .

I had the same problem. Found that the Windows default time providers were not working for me, but that "tick.usno.navy.mil" does work fine.

Choose Start, Run, type regedit and hit ENTER (to edit the registry).
Navigate to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/DateTime/Servers]

Right click on the first line and choose "Modify" and change the data element to 1.
(This will select the first time provider on your list as the default provider).
Right click on the second line, choose "Modify" and change the data element to:

tick.usno.navy.mil

You can add more time servers if you wish, for example:

"2"="time-a.nist.gov"
"3"="time-b.nist.gov"
"4"="128.105.37.11"
"5"="europe.pool.ntp.org"
"6"="clock.isc.org"
"7"="north-america.pool.ntp.org"
"8"="time.windows.com"
"9"="time.nist.gov"

Closing the registry editor will automatically save your changes.
Open the Date and Time Properties/Internet time and scroll down the new list.
