An ad has taken over my desktop....

I have an ad for a sypware removal software (ironic) that has taken over my
desktop. It disabled my Webshots software and the ability to access my
settings by left clicking on my dsektop. I can't change anything, the desktop
background, my resolution, or anything else. I have run spybot and ad-ware SE
resulting in no change in my desktop. If anyone has any information that
would help my to get rid of this abtrusive ad, I would be grateful. I run
Windows XP -Home Edition, with SP1.
Thanks for your time,
signed, very aggravated!!!!

Go to this web site and download the registry fix from line
285, right hand side, Restore all Display Tabs.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Next, go to Start -> Control Panel and double click on Display
Click on the Desktop tab
Hit the "Customize Desktop" button
Click on the Web tab
Click on any unfamiliar items, other than "My Current Home
Page", and select Delete
Remove the check mark from the box next to "Lock Desktop
items".

Once you get this issue resolved, you might want to do the
following:

Make sure your antivirus program is up-to-date and run a scan.

Visit some of the online virus scanners
and see what they find:

Run both the AntiVirus and the AntiSpyware scan on this site:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Click on the "Scan your PC button" while holding down the CTRL
key (to override any popup stoppers):

Symantec Security Check

Finally, go to this web site and download HijackThis:

HijackThis 1.99.1

Run the program and save the log. There are a number of web
sites where HijackThis logs should be posted. Here are some of

All anti malware scans should be done in safe mode.

And after you've implemented all the fine recommendations offered by
Netpatsfan and Rock, upgrade your Home edition to SP2.
