AMD64 and SP2

Hello all,

I am having problems trying to install Win XP SP2 on a 'Shuttle XPC' case
with an AMD64 CPU. After a bit of browsing on 'google' I think it could
possibly be something to do with DEP (Data Execution Prevention), and it
seems that disabling this new SP2 feature will solve this problem.

Has anyone else had problems with SP2 and AMD64 CPU's? And did you find a
workaround?

I have tried the MS disable DEP workaround, but I may try it again as it
seems to be the prime suspect, so far at least.

SP2 installs ok, it is when it tries to reboot things get as far as the
initial splash screen, it then hangs for a few seconds and reboots. Safe
Mode is luckily working fine, so I can just uninstall SP2 from there and
everything is ok again.

I have checked the list of incompatible programmes, and I cannot find
anything that looks like causing this, although obviously something is. But
I am not sure if it is a hardware or software problem.

I have SP2 installed on two computers with AMD64 CPUs with no porblems.
As far as I've been able to see AMD64 CPUs only have this problem with SP2
when the following four conditions are met. 32bit XP installed, SP2
installed, Dep or
Data execution protection is enabled and hardware is installed that requires
the Mpegport.sys driver.

Running fine here on 64 3000+ overclocked.
Installed by slipstreaming onto CD and doing "upgrade".

See Jim's post re that file.

Hi Bob,

I have an AMD 3200+ and needed a beta bios from MSI before SP2 would install
properly. (bios is version 1.83). Now SP2 works great. I got BSOD and
numerous SVHOST errors before I did the bios update. I found I had to
research before the installation and I can not recommend backing up all your
needed files before you attempt this upgrade.

Hi Robert:
Installed on Asrock K8S8X with 3000+. Had latest bios already installed.
I had to reinstall the ATI control panel and Asrock sound drivers after the
SP2 "upgrade", and
all has been well since. There even seemed to be somewhat of a speedup. No
slowdowsn in any app or function that I can detect.

Thanks for the info. I have tried disabling DEP, a diagnostic start-up,
installing new graphics card adapters etc. Not sure if SP2 is the real
cause, as I have seen something similar before, but it was the reboot loop
problem and I think it was the graphics that caused the problem.
