From reading articles on the AMD site, and articles found by Googling "DDR3
vs DDR2",
I would suspect for two reasons:

1. AMD is prioritizing it's resources to faster Phenoms first, and appears
to be in no rush to adapt to DDR3. Articles indicate early 2009.

2. Reviews and comparisons indicate little, if any, performance gain on
current Core 2 chipsets, while the price difference is substantial.

To justify current DDR3 prices, a substantial performance increase would
have to be demonstrated. That hasn't happened yet.

As you don't indicate what kind of motherboard you plan to buy, or if you
intend to use a CPU you currently own or buy a new one, why not consider an
AM2+ board with your choice of CPU (my Phenom on an Asus M3A is great for
me), and take advantage of the low DDR2 prices. Or, you could do the same
with a Core 2 Duo or Quad lashup. Paying for DDR3 at current prices makes no
sense to me.
