AMD ceased production of the Althlon XP?

I was thinking of upgrading the processor in my machine, a 1Ghz Duron.
But unfortunately I only have a Abit KT7A motherboard, which is only
has a max bus speed of 266Mhz, so I assume a Sempron is out (probably
need a BIOS update anyway, and the last BIOS update seems to have been
in 2002). Just checking at dabs.com, and the only Althon XP available
seems to be the 2200+. So have AMD stopped making all Athlon XPs and
are stocks about to run out of even this model? I think there used to
be a 2400+ version too, that worked on a 266Mhz bus, is there any
chance of still getting one of those new?

And is it me, or are these chips more expensive than they used to be a
few months ago, £48? (with fan, the 3 year warranty boxed ones) Seems
a bit steep compared to the Semprons. Just wondering if they might
continue selling them for a while for old systems, and might come
cheaper, or if that's it, and I need to grab one now if I want a new
one?

Thanks in advance

Yes they're phasing them out and may only make limited
numbers in the future, and at least the mid-low speeds are
higher priced than they once were at some places. However,
there's not much point in looking at only dabs, they are not
necessarily an indicator of anything other than what their
buyer(s) bought, what stock they alone have.

There is no point in waiting to see if they drop a couple
dollars, go ahead and buy one.

Have you considered a Duron Applebred as an upgrade?

They work on a 266FSB and are available at up to 1800MHz speeds.

I hadn't heard of them to be honest, I thought the Duron was dead. I'm
not sure if they're available in the UK, any idea?

Thanks

You don't really want one, the lower L2 cache is a
significant performance hit. Look around and you will be
able to find something, an Athlon XP2200 or higher will be
faster than an 1.8GHz Duron. If your motherboard supports
multiplier adjustments you could just buy an XP2700 and run
it on DDR266 FSB, which will have a base speed of XP2100 and
multiplier increase will take it as high as your board can
run stabily (past a certain point old boards may have
trouble delivering ample power, not all were designed with
2.5GHz CPUs in mind).

Just get the Barton now. Around here I noticed the non-retail versions
are still around and mobile versions. However the price has gone up
and places like Newegg dont even list the retail version anymore so Id
get it now. Either that or youll be stuck getting the semperon.

You know the socket A semperons seem wimpy but compared to the same
rating Athlon XP , but I havent looked at the 754 socket semperons
which some have been talking about.

The 3100+ 754 socket I see in the US on pricewatch is $123 and they
say its based on the amd 64 chip with 64 bit extensions disabled etc.
So instead of what I was thinking was a real bad move for AMD
loyalists --- having the bartons etc taken away , maybe you can get a
better deal in a while with a really cheap socket 754 board and a
semperon 32bit 3100 or higher if they come out with one. Ive heard it
has better performance and if price come down a bit , as 939 becomes
even more popular --- even though 754 socket isnt as attractive as the
939 , its more attractive than the old socket A boards and has the
possiblity of you plopping in 64 bit chip later.

In the US the 754 boards are pretty cheap.
