Hi,

I would like to know which is the best investment to buy, there are motherboard
with socket 754, 939 and 940.

It looks like 939 but Id wait until the PCI Express boards come out
anyday now.......................hopefully. Theyve been hyping these
boards for a while now and they were supposed to come out already but
the VIA and Nforce both havent come out. Also Id wait until the prices
come down a bit and the Winchester 90nm version of the chips come out
and come down in price. That would be the best combo if you can get
them at reasonable prices. Mainly because the initial overview of the
chips by Anandtech claim it can overclock like crazy making it much
more like the older AMD chips so if you can get them for $200 or so -
a 3000 AMD 64 supposedly it can OC to a level that puts it ahead of
the fastest AMD 64 chip fairly easily.

The 754 as the Anandtech article claimed will be phased out over a
year and a half or less so its got less life in it but if you can get
one for really cheap and there are refurbs floating around for pretty
cheap at least in the US and they say the 3100 semperon can overclock
like crazy right now , maybe the 90nm version will OC even more? Who
knows -- anyways if that starts falling even more in price to the
range the socket As were 70-80 - if you can pick up a refurb board
nforce 754 board for say 50-60 and a semperon 3100 for 80 then thats a
killer combo for cheap though it has a more limited life.

Right now the semperon 3100 is around I think 120 and only 20 bucks or
so cheaper than the 2800 64 AMD so its not as attractive as it might
be. The 2800 has the 64 bit potential but I dont think it OCes that
well from posts Ive read but I could be wrong. For performance today
- the semperon 3100 if it OCes as easily as Xbit labs claims --- makes
it very very attractive budget chip if the price gap opens up between
it and the 2800 64 m hopefully down in the 80-90 buck range.

Ideally Id like to see the 3100 + 754 sockets at around 80+ 80 for a
cheap decent board and even lower with a refurb. That would make it a
red hot budget combo much like the barton 2500 + nforce was.

And then wait a bit for the 90nm AMD 64 3000 + new nforce with
PCI-express to come down into the $200+ 130 range or even lower which
may take a few months or longer since the board isnt even out yet.

It depends on how much of your present set-up you plan on using, as well
as how much you wish to provide for future developments, v.s. a cheap
solution for the present. I just put together a system using an MSI
K8MM-ILSR, (Socket 754), with an AMD64 3000+. Although not a great
system for gaming or extreme video use, there is 6 channel audio and an
adequate video, plus Ethernet, and IEEE 1394 and 8 USB 2.0 ports on the
MB, all for about $220, including the "boxed" CPU. Add 512MB of DDR3200
memory, and you've got a decent system for trying out the Athlon 64.

Well to answer your question, I'm planning to keep everything but the current
motherboard and CPU

I currently have 2 IDE HDD, 1 SATA HDD, DVD-ROM, DVD ±RW, and a GeForce TI4400 ,
and 2Gb PC3200 RAM
