AMD Athlon 64 and windows xp 32 bit

I have recently bought an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ processor and asus K8V SE
Deluxe motherboard. I have tried to install windows xp profesional 32 bit but
when it gets to the language and network configuration etc. it gives me a
"MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" error. Is this some form of hardware problem and is
there any way of resolving it?
