AMD Athalon Temerature

Doing some research and have not found any answers that are concrete. I'm
running and Athalon XP @ 1679mhz (AMD XP 2000) I believe, and on an ASUS
A7V266E mobo. This box is only used to store and listen to music, store
files etc. The only other thing I use it for is to burn Cd's with music.

I've spoke with numerous technicians, looked at way to many web-sites. I
just wanted some opinions from folks here about operating temperatures.

Booting into bios it shows the case temp as 24Celsius, the CPU as 50
Running all day playing music it never fluctuates higher, only occasionally
lower, maybe 47-49. I've seen articles that say it can run safely at this
temp. and could even get to 80 Celsius!!!!

It has a very good heatsink and fan, also 5 external fans. 350w Power
supply.

any thoughts??

I'm not sure exactly what your question is...but;

The Athlon XP 2000 should be running fine at 50. The critical temp for the
Athlon is either 85 or 90 (depending on which chip you have). While other
things can effect the idle temp of the CPU, the item which most effects it
is the heatsink/fan. If you want it to run cooler, simply installing a
larger heatsink or faster fan should do the trick. Your case temp is
already pretty low, so there really isn't much else that you can do. Also,
many CPU fans are variable speed when connected to the 3-pin outlet on the
motherboard. When the CPU doesn't require maximum cooling, the fan slows
down to reduce noise. Forcing the fan to run full speed all the time helps
cooling, but is louder. This is controlled either in the BIOS or by virtue
of the fan itself (for example, ThermalTake fans generally can be connected
to run full-speed by using a jumper).

An idle temp of 50, however, is perfectly acceptable.

Without knowing your question - yes, I have thoughts.

I am wondering what it is you want to know? Is it about temperatures or are
you asking if the power supply is correct?

I previously had a Barton XP 2800+, it typcially ran around 40 idle, around
44 load.
I am now running a XP64 3500+, it stays around 42 -44 idle, 48-52 load, have
no issues with it. I do have it overclocked to 2.553 ghz.
It has run Prime95 for about 10 consecutive hours with no errors.

You should be fine. I would start getting concerned if it got into the 60's
much, I like having a nice safety cushion. If you start to notice your
temps climbing later on, check for dust buildup on the heatsink and fan, and
might be time to replace thermal paste as well.

I've got it overclocked to 2.5GHz and it's at 35c. It rarely comes
close to 50c -- regardless of the load. I'm using Arctic Silver's
ceramic thermal compound. I could probably hit 2.7GHz, but why bother
at this point. It's already plenty fast. I'd recommend the 90nm
Winchester version.
