Will a Socket 939 chip work in an AM2 mobo? I have an old 4000+ single core
chip i dont wanna get rid of just yet. Thanks for any info provided.

Won't work. Different memory controller. Plenty of 939 boards, DDR
memory is still pretty cheap.
 
Am2 boards are 940 pin.
I dont think a 939 will fit. (could be wrong though)

You would not be wrong. The pin arrangement is completely different.

Take a look at an Asus A8NE mobo. It's primed for overclocking.
I had my Athlon 64 3500 in it. Then upgraded to a FX-55 (san diego).
