Am I reading disk space wrong?

I loaded XP Pro, and NIC driver. These two took 1.32G of
a 3G hard drive. What's up?

That's probably about right - have you got your Pagefile on that drive as
well? (It's a hidden system file....)
Mine takes up 1.46 GB with office XP (that's 242 MB) and no pagefile.
 
If you have only the operating system and the NIC drivers,
then that is possibly the correct amount of disk space.
Windows XP Home and Pro take up to 1.5GB of disk space in
most cases. Install sizes of device drivers may vary, but
usually are around a few megabytes.
