Am I infected with mal-ware?

I know for a fact that I was previously.

I gave up trying to repair it and just reformatted / re-installed everything.

My system was running perfect for a few days and all the old problems are
now solved.

But now I have one new problem: The Background Intelligent Transfer Service
keeps changing it's setting from "Manual" to "Automatic" at boot.

I set a lot of services to disable / manual for security / performance
reasons.

But I also have a lot of new updates:
..Net frame work 3.0 (Had 2.0)
ctfmon.exe (Not sure why I have it though? It came in on the last batch of
updates, I hope, even though I don't have Office.)
new updates for Windows Live One Care (Which never worked properly before
due to the old infection.)

Plus a ton of other stuff from Windows Update.

So what I'm wondering is this:
Is this behavior being caused by one of the new updates? Or the fact that
One Care is finally working? Or is it a sign of an infection?

BTW, I can disable the BIT and it will stay off.

But if I set it to Manual it just flips itself back over to Automatic,
starts running and stays that way.

Other than this one thing my system is running great now and I'm not getting
any of the lags or hiccups normally associated with an infection.

I looked up the BIT in the MS KB and it said that when BIT is set to manual
it will set itself to automatic if there are any BIT jobs waiting to be done
at boot. But AFAIK, nothing legitimate is creating a BIT boot job because
when I disable BIT even though it stays off I don't get any messages at boot
telling that any programs had an error.

I appreciate any advice. I'd really rather not have to reformat again.

Thankx.

I have a question. How did you manage to get the system infected with
malware?
