i have been so excited about vista when beta 2 and rc 1 came out i did
upgrades and got blue screened..A LOT. since i got my dvd from microsoft and
did a clean install i LOVE it!!!! i am about to do a clean install to rc2
but i can safely say i have had no problems. i also recommend not having a
bunch of unnecessary programs on your computer. i don't really care what
critics say, i will be one of the first in line for vista and office 2007

Betas and RCs are for getting to know, for testing.

RTMs are for clean install.

I did an upgrade from XP to RC2 5744 and it was great. No errors at all and
the whole process took 1 hour or so and I didn't have to reinstall any of my
15 or so programs and all are running great....Yes a clean install is good
too but I tell ya, no complaints here from the upgrade.

I am used to doing fresh installs, about every 6 months, while using XP. I
will be doing a fresh install of Vista, once I get the RTM. We shall see how
often I will be "flattening" my system with Vista.

Gary,

Check out, if you haven't already done so, the Complete PC backup
functionality built into Vista, which is a disk imaging solution, ala Ghost
or DriveImage. My plan is to do a clean install, install all my apps, and
then snap a Complete PC backup. When you want to bring your seat back to a
bare metal state after 6 months, just restore from the Complete PC backup.
That will save you some serious time. Assuming it works as advertised... ;-)

As a matter of good secruity practice and to keep a clean stable system I
usually do a wipe and clean install every 12 months or so. Windows and third
party installers leave so much garbage around there's really no other way to
keep a system clean.

As for upgrading to Vista, I will probably (after doing a full image
backup), do an upgrade over XP to see how all my currently installed programs
& apps behave. Then once i am ready to do it for keeps, do a wipe and clean
install, etc....
