microsoftware-flawed ?
only thing i'm concerned with is that is has to be simple to use.

Paint.Net: URL:http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/

(e-mail address removed):
You might try "The Gimp", which is well-known to Linux users, but also
runs under windows:

The OP stipulated:

Whatever the qualities of The Gimp may be, simplicity and
userfriendliness are not among them. I could do with something a
little bit more versatile than MS Paint, but not even half as complex
as The Gimp, myself.

I agree, even with using the GimpShop version it is still unfriendly
because it doesn't follow the standard Windows menu and toolbar
interface.

Ignore Paint.NET because it has unintuitive text handling.

The choices below are better:

Serif PhotoPlus6 www.freeserifsoftware.com

Photofiltre www.photofiltre.com

PhotoBase www.arcsoft.com

You might want to Google for a program called Art Rage. It has been
mentioned here before but I haven't tried it.

The programs you suggest are good for processing pictures in many ways,
like changing the light level or color tone, and some simple editing.

There are freeware paint programs, which are more suitable for creating
new pictures, like real painting.

Pixia is a very good and fast paint program, small size, good interface
(after you have looked at the help file).

A new freeware paint program is Deep Paint 2.

Deep paint 2 is a big download, 58MB, but it is a very interesting
paint program.

The oil brushes are incredible, it is like mixing real oil color on a
palette. I have only tried DP2 for an hour in total, but so far
everything seems to work as it should.

Both Pixia and Deep Paint 2 have layers, which is a very useful
feature, once you learn to use it.
I struggled to learn how to use layers for years earlier until I found
Pixia, it made it easy to use and understand layers.

<snipped info on Pixia and Deep Paint [1] >

The original objective was to exceed MS Paint, not Corel Painter. The
photo/paint programs mentioned above are more than competitive with MS
Paint for painting.
