In Word 2003 is it possible to set a sequence of alternating page numbers,
e.g., to get the page numbering function to number consecutive pages in one
document 1-3-5-7-etc?

You could use a calculated page number field:

{ = { = 2 * { page } } - 1 }

but do not type the curly braces; instead, insert each
pair by pressing Ctrl+F9. When you've finished entering
the page number field, press Alt+F9 to switch back to
display of field results (the page number) instead of
field codes.

How much more specific do you need? Press CTRL and F9 together for the
bracket pairs {} and type in the rest..

Thankd you for clarification, apart from the "how much more specific do you
need?" snide comeback. We're not all Word MVPs.
