altering numbers in left hand column

how do i change the numbers in the left hand column of a worksheet so that
the number one is below my worksheet headings

ie

description cost date purchased date sold

hi,
If i understand you correctly, you are talking about the
defalut xl row numbers and not a column of numbers you
input.
you can not move or change this numbers. nor can you
change the column letters to your own headers.
you can change the column letters to numbers by
Tools>options>General tab>check use R1C1 reference style.
xl uses these row number and column letters(or numbers) as
it's own reference. they cannot be altered.
best bet is to add a column of your own numbers.
