I cannot do an ALT-PrtScn for any windows. Is there some sort of registry
fix I can do to implement it again. I am not sure when it quit working, but
really have used it a lot in the past.

Thanks.

1. Does PrtScn work? (no? keyboard broken?)
2. Are you using a PS/2 -> USB convertor on the keyboard? (some of them
break the Alt-Prtscr keycode)

The PrtScn never "really" dumps the screen to the printer. It normally take a
"copy" to the clipboard. You can then "paste" it into a "graphics ready"
application like Word or Paint.

Who said he was trying to dump the screen to the printer?

You say you "really have used it a lot in the past," so you probably
understand this, but just to make sure you haven't forgotten, let me point
out that what Alt-Prt-Scrn does is copy the active Window to the clipboard;
it doesn't actually print anything.

If you already knew this, my apologies.

I am well aware of what is supposed to happen, it does not copy to the
clipboard. I can get the whole screen with just pushing print screen, but
with multiple monitors that really sucks, I am only interested in the active
window. I am taking shots for documentation. I have had to resort to
downloading a screen capture software package to get what I want, actually
it is copying to the clipboard for me, then I paste in MS Paint and save as
PNG.

There has to be a way to find how it became broken in the registry. I am
actually running Server 2003, but I have had it working before.

Any other ideas anyone?

You might want to post this question to the Win2K.Gen newsgroup as they
cover a variety of W2x server issues, too, as well as one or more of the
Windows Server NGs. Most of the folks here are focused on WinXP (some
know nothing else!) and there may be something specific to Win2K3 Server
to do with this. I have an eval of Win2K3 but haven't been used it in a
long time.

Good luck.

I have a Microsoft keyboard that has an F Lock key on it. If it is
turned on the PrtScn function does not work.

Ok, I may have stumbled on what is causing the issue, it is not a Windows
issue but my switch box. I recently was given a new switch box for my PC's
at work and it seems a Belkin Omniview Pro2 FTDA104T is not passing it
correctly. One of my machines is a laptop with Server 2003 and if I use the
laptop keyboard it works, but if I use my external (goes through the switch
box) it does not work. The cables I am using are USB not PS2. I hope to get
some response out of Belkin, but just thought I would post my findings and
thank all who have contributed their thoughts.

Andy,

I am having the same problem where the Alt Print Screen does not copy the
active window to the clipboard. What I have discovered in my case is that if
I also hold down the Fn (Function Key) it does work.

Does anyone have any idea why the Alt Print Screen feature may not be
working? I run XP SP@ on a HP DV1340us laptop.

Please help us to help you. What does "I cannot do" mean? What happens when
you try? If you get an error message, please quote it verbatim.

I am new to the group, and my first reply came through as blank. I don't
know what I did wrong, but bare with me, and I'll try once more.

After reading all I could from the various posts, I finally was able to use
my Print Screen Key. He are the steps I took:

First...I had to find my MS Paint program that was missing:
1- Click Start
2- Search
3- On left side click All Files & Folders
4- Type in MS Paint Click Search
5- On Search Results, right click MSPaint .exe....Send to Desktop as
Short Cut
Second..Print Screen
1- Click Print Screen Tab
2- Open MS Paint on Desk Top
3- Press Ctrl + V together and here's our screen shot.

Hope this works for you.

I just tested my last post:

I clicked Alt + Print Screen, then the steps of my last post, and I
got just the window, not the full screen.

Just type mspaint in Start Run, or
Right click a blank space on desktop or in a folder and New ... menu - New Bitmap Image, right click the new file and choose Edit, or
Start - All Programs - Accessories - Paint

You can right click Paint on the Start Menu (and maybe the one you found searching) and choose Pin To Start to add to top of Start Menu. You could do this with the desktop icon but you won't be able to delete it then.
