Alphabetizing endnotes

Word2000: I use the "Insert Endnotes" feature to add references to scientific
papers. This creates a sequential reference number in the text. Some
journals require that the references be alphabetized by author's last name.
I would like to sort the endnotes into alphabetical order while preserving
the linkage to the text (obviously, the number in a specific location in the
text might change). I have not been able to find a way to do this and am out
of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Suzanne, this seems to work if you have works cited list complete and
alphabetized before you write your article. But that is rarely the case. If
I add another work somewhere in the list (therefore the list renumbers
itself), will Word update the numbering in the text appropriately?
Thanks
Mike

Yes. The list itself will update automatically. The cross-references will
update when you print or Print Preview or when you select the entire
document and F9.
