Allow others to browse my website?

Hi:

My PC is connected to a 4-port router, and the router is connected to a
cable modem.

What are the steps I need to take in order to allow others from the outside
world to browse the web site (ASP.NET) on my PC?

Thanks

Read the section in your router manual regarding Port Forwarding. You need
to forward the web port (typically port 80) to the computer on your LAN
that has the web server and is hosting your site.

First you have to ask your cable provider whether they allow this. Doing so
against their terms of service gets your account terminated.

Second, ensure your PC is stable, secure, has up to date antivirus and a
good firewall. You're asking people to come into your PC and on to your
hard drive. They WILL try to hack you. It's only a matter of time.
Whether they succeed or not is entirely up to you!

Long, long article, but each page is well worth reading... and then
re-reading.

One thing to remember... XP Pro is limited to 10 simultaneous connections -
and a single website with multiple subwebs. A connection is not a single
person browsing. It is a 'link' to an image, a page, a hyperlink etc etc so
all 10 will be quickly taken. The 11th connection is refused.

Only solution to this is to move to a Server operating system (ie Windows
2000 Server, Windows 2000 Small Business Server, Windows 2003 Server or
Windows 2003 Small Business Server). The SBS editions are not unlimited
connections.... SBS 2000 is 49, SBS 2003 is 75. Full Server operating
systems allow unlimited connections and the ability to host unlimited
websites.

.....in addition, there are TONS of cheap 'n cheerful hosting companies out
there - check out olm.net. I wouldn't wanna host a public website on my own
servers, let alone my sole workstation.

Your IP address would have to be statically assigned to you. Chances are your cable iinternet service is providing you with a dynamic IP address, which could be different each time you restart the cable modem and users could not find the new address.
