All sent excel attachments show up at other end as .dat files

When sending an excel(97) spreadsheet as an attachment
from Outlook 97 the attachments always show up as a .dat
files. Is there a setting I need to change?
 
Change your Outlook to use Plain Text instead of Rich Text. (tools,
options).
