My " all programs" list on the start menu is missing many items and most of what remains is empty folders---is it something I did? Thanks so much for some help.

Bill--

I don't know a cause. Do you have restore points before this you can try?

Of course, there is no way any of us can help you because a) we don't
know what you did, either; b) we can't see your computer from here. Try
doing a System Restore to when things worked. Also scan with a current
antivirus (post-2002 version) using updated definitions. Continue your
cleanup by removing spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode.

If I understand you correctly, you're saying antivirus scans, and apps like
Spybot and Adaware are best run in Safe Mode. I doubt very many people do,
and I wonder what the advantages of running *these* in Safe Mode are?

Hi, Chad. The reason I suggest running spyware removal tools and
antivirus scans in Safe Mode is that you can't delete files that are in
use. Most malware will load into memory immediately upon starting
Windows in Regular Mode. Although there are certainly viruses and other
malware that will still run in Safe Mode, your chances of *not* having
all that cr*p running in the background are greater in Safe Mode. Of
course you definitely want to use Safe Mode with*out* networking.

HTH,

Thanks. Good point, although I've gotten rid of most malware without being
in Safe Mode using Adaware. I'm sure there are a large nuumber of spyware,
malware, Trojans that can't be eliminated by the range of antispyware apps
and might need to be eliminated from Safe Mode. This is something I'll
keep in mind from now on.
