All Programs does not expand

When I click Start on my Windows XP menu, and then All Programs, the menu
does not expand! I can not chose anything from All Programs menu. I have
tried some disk maintenace and registry maintenace programs, but it does not
help. Also, computer has become very slow and sluggish. Any clues would be
greatly appreciated.
 
Registry maintenance programs make things worse, not better.

Thoroughly scan your system for malicious software with /several/ of the
better online scanners (Kaspersky, Eset, Trend Micro, Panda, Sophos,
Symantec etc.) and, if necessary, submit a HiJack This log to one of the
expert web sites that analyze these logs.
