I just installed a new printer and when I rebooted the printer was
grayed out, it said port unavailable.

When I investigated further ALL the ports are gone...LPT, IP, COM...the
whole lot.

How do I get them back?

I turned off system restore so that is not an option unfortunately.

Disconnect the printer. Turn computer completely off and then reboot.
The ports should now be listed or you can add them manually, such
as LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, COM (Serial port) and DOT (USB). If not,
You may also need to check the BIOS if ports are not disabled.

Do not connect the printer to the PC. Install the software during which
you will be prompted when to connect it and when to turn it on.
BTW: TURN ON your Restore feature. Turning it off is foolish.

There are too many variables to answer your question. Since USB
came on the scene there are very few calls for COM, or Parallel ports.
They may be disabled in the BIOS to conserve resources.
