all Microsoft Word files are being saved as WordPad files

I opened one of my files in WordPad that Microsoft Word would not open and
then WordPad took over all my Microsoft Word files that were not rich text
files. I can open files in Microsoft Word, however even though I save them
as Word documents they appear as WordPad documents in all file menus.
This change even occurred on a flash drive that I use as backup. I need to
get them back as Word documents for a variety of reasons. I am using
Microsoft Word 2003--

They are still Word documents, the only thing that changed is that you
managed to assign WordPad as the default program to open Word
documents rather than Word.

Right click a document in Windows Explorer (you might have to hold
down the SHIFT key while doing so). Choose "Open With ...". Select
Word as the program to open that format. Check the always open with
this application check box at the bottom.
