All mails contain attachment with name ATTxxxxx.txt

Cheers!

Since a couple of days, nearly all mails which I pull into Outlook 2002
(running on Win 2000 Pro) via pop3 contain an attachment with the name
ATTxxxxx.txt. The xxxxx stands for some digits, and the attachment
contains exactly a copy of the mail message (which is displayed
normally, i.e. I can see the mail as I am used to and as it always was,
and additionally, I have this attachment which contains the mail
message a second time).

I have googled and msdn'ed, and I have learned that this usually is due
to TNEF headers in the mails. But I have to doubt that these are the
reason for my problem:

1) Nearly all mails have these attachments, among these are mails from
well-known, big mailing lists, and I don't believe that these mails
have TNEF headers.

2) The TNEF problem seems to occur only with old versions of Outlook,
but mine is version 2002 / XP.

3) Even mails sent by sendmail from a Linux system get these
attachments! Since I have personally written the script which sends
these mails, and since I personlly have configured and installed
sendmail on the respective machine, I am absolutely sure that these
emails, in their original state, don't know anything about TNEF.

4) The phenomenon began just a couple of days ago, although I had not
changed any settings on my box. But I had automatic windows update
turned on!

So I suspect this is caused by windows update somehow. Does anyone know
what happens here?

Thank you very much,

Peter

Got a virusscanner that integrates with Outlook? Disable the integration and
