All folders under C: are READ ONLY

I am running a PowerEdge Dell 750 server and windows XP SP1 on it. It seems
that all of the folders contained within the C: Drive are Read Only, files
within the folders are not set to read only, and if I create new folders in
the root of C: or in any sub directory it sets them to Read Only.

I have tried a attrib -r -s -a C:\FOLDER to get rid of the read only like
some people have suggested. I also spoke to a dell representative of the
server support team and he suggest a low level format of the hard drive and a
reinstall. I found the correct utility on Maxtor's site for a low level
format and used that for the low level format, then I reinstalled windows XP
on the machine. As soon as I checked the folders they were still all read
only.

Please does anyone have a solution to this problem?

There's no problem. Windows does not tell you the status of read only for folders. As there no reason for you to know that.

Yes there is a problem, right click on a folder when you are in windows
explorer and the check box that says Read-only yah that one, that tells you
if the folder is set to read only. This is a problem because I need users on
the network to be able to add to folders on this server, and with read only
being set on the folders no matter what I put for permissions on the folders
it does not allow me to put information to the folders on this machine. This
includes permissions such as Everyone with full control, this is a big
problem and no one seems to have an answer for me.

It's not saying read only it's not saying at all. Click the checkbox three times. Use attrib to see if a folder is read only. The checkbox is there on folders so you can change all files in a folder. Nothing stops a program writing to a read only directory as read only is not applicable to folders only files. But as folders are files with the directory attribute set (and you can't change that with anything) they have the same space. But it means nothing.

Ok I see what you mean, but this is the first time I have run across this why
is it that it only popped up on this machine, all other machines I work with
do not have the green box that fills the Read-only check box. And still
wondering why I cant get a user to add anything to the shared location
considering I have all users with full control even specifying the user with
full control does nothing. Could this have anything to do with the net config
server /hidden:yes command I used to hide the machine from the network? Sorry
for my earlier reply this problem has been frustrating me for 2 days.

Well it should be a grey tick or a light green.

Some programs don't know that read only means nothing on a folder (so explorer uses it, as it is unused, to tell it there is a custom icon or special folder) and they test the folder for read only and choose not to try to write. However this is rare, esp among commercial programs. And very rare for anything released since 1995.

Does your share have correct permissions. Have you done a Effective Permissions (same dialog different tab as Security - Advanced) for the user on that folder (share and folder permissions must allow). Can they copy files there using explorer/command prompt. If the file exists have you checked it's security (and while RO does stop a file being written some programs will take off RO, save, put it back on).

What are all the error messages that you get from various way to write to the folder. Is there a deny higher in the folder structure (Deny ALWAYS over rules Allow), Effective Permissions will tell you.

Currently the box for RO has is filled in green.

There are no programs on the machine it is a fresh install of XP thats why i
am a little bit curious why this looks so different. Is it possible that its
the way the hard drive is configured on this server?

The share that I want to have people write on is shared correctly but I have
tried to make it as open as possible to test why its not working. Right now
the permissions for \\COMPUTER\logs$\test is:

Sharing permissions, full control
Security permissions:
domain users, full control
everyone, full control
SPECIFIC_USER, full control

And yet still when I try to create a file or folder of any kind within the
share from another computer it spits out, "Unable to create file 'File or
folder name' access is denied.
If I try to copy a file from the computer that has access to see the folder,
when I paste the file it gives the error, "Cannot copy FILE: access is
denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file
is not currently in use."

I keep thinking that it might have to do with the net config server
/hidden:yes command that I used to hide the machine from the network. Could
that be the issue?

Thanks for your help in trying to help me with this issue.

Actually I just tried something and that worked just fine, just wondering why
it doesn't work the other way. In Windows explorer I typed:

\\COMPUTER\C$\logs\

And I can create/delete/edit files and folders from there

but if I do a

\\COMPUTER\logs$\

This doesnt allow me to do anything.

SIDENOTE: The logs folder is shared as logs$ and has the same permissions as
the C: drive on that machine.

Any ideas?
