aligning autoshapes to other page elements

I am entering text and images into a layout table, and annotating this
content with various autoshapes - callouts, arrows, etc. How do I get
the drawn shapes to line up properly with the text and inserted images?
Alignment looks good in Design but is incorrect in Preview.
Thanks for any advice.
 
before you go way out on a autoshape limb.. know that autoshapes like wordart are vml and will only work in IE (5+ I think).

using IE6 and using Frontpage to build a Help system for an app that
requires at least IE 5
