AIW 9000 TV Quality

I'm using an ATI All in Wonder Radeon 9000 PRO card and the TV quality
is not very good. I installed all the ATI software that came with the
card and also tried the updated versions. My TV singal is analouge
cable - coaxial cable input. Works fine on my TV.

Some channels are better that others. I also installed IULabs IUvcr,
this is a bit better but not great. Also tried a load of other tv tuner
programs. I'm using a 17" TFT with its native resolution: 1280x1024.(I
tried using different resolutions). DVDs play perfect using the ATI
software.

Really annoying, I used to have an old All in Wonder Pro using the same
cable source and it was near perfect on most channels. Would have kept
it but it only had 4mb memory.

Is there anything I can do?

Posting this as a last resort.

BTW, is is possible to hook up a VCR with a TV tuner to this card?
What cables would I require?

thanks in advance

Yup...

Stop expecting decent quality from a low res analogue source on a high
res digital display.

My AIW 9000's TV quality is very good...

When people first see it, they say "wow"!

I didn't realize how good it was until I had to get rid of it to get
seperate display and TV card...

It should be as good as your television set. Things to be considered:

1. Since some channels are better than the others, the most likely cause is
that some appliance emits frequency interfering with some TV channels. Could
be the computer itself or its cards. Try to move the computer and the cable
around to see if there is improvement. Avoid being too close to other cables
and power cords.

2. Avoid long cable run. The longer the cable, the increase of the
possibility that it picks up some interference along the path and the weaker
the signal.

3. If you split the cable too many, try to use a signal booster. Buy it at
your local Radio Shack. Buy one with FM trapper so it can filter some radio
frequency.

4. Use better quality cable only. Bad one can pick up frequency interference
easily.

The ATI tuner cards (both the AIW and the TV Wonder) are not as good as
a good tv. They all have relatively noisy pictures.

does anyone know if it would be possible to connect a vcr to this card
and use the tuner in that? What cable would I require?
I have the following cables:

have the following cables:

of course, just use the S-video out of your VCR into the S-video in of the
AIW - don't forget to route the audio too.

If your VCR doesn't have S-video, you can just use a standard RCA hookup,
The RCA-outs from the VCR straight to the RCA-ins on your purple box.

NOT TRUE.
I don't see any noise on the AIW.

If you see any noise, you should know the problem could be fixed.

I agree, but I don't see noise so much as soft details and deinterlacing
artifacts. If you see static or significant grain it could be due to low
power levels on your cable signal - the AIW really likes strong signals.
Overall it's quite inferior to a high quality TV, but pretty good for
displays the size of a computer monitor.

If you've ever seen the inside of a TV, there's a LOT of circuitry in there
to massage NTSC signals into something respectable. There simply isn't the
room (or budget) for that sort of processing on an AIW.

ATI's signal processing HAS gotten a lot better over the years - comparing
the TV quality of an old AIW Pro to my current AIW 9800 Pro (both hooked up
to the same monitor at the same time) the 9800 Pro is a heck of a lot
better.

For me, it's a driver issue. I can barely see some upper channels with
Catalyst 5.2 and MMC 9.03 whereas I could get them perfectly about five or
six revisions ago.
